Lydia has worked in the aerospace industry as an administrator and acting cost estimating supervisor over seeing contracts, scheduling, and budget costs. Lydia returned back into the classroom and has been a public-school teacher for over 25 years. Lydia Gutierrez served seven years as an elected official board member for the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council that oversaw the Coast of San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles.

Lydia’s has the experience in understanding the demands of both educational and budgetary demands with more than 25 years as a teacher, and 6 years as an administrator and financial supervisor in the aerospace industry.

Lydia’s mission is to elevate the Los Angeles Community College District to become the frontrunner in setting academic and vocational standards of excellence for community colleges nationwide.

Lydia believes that our youth need to know that they have a future to be economically independent and be a productive member in our society.

Lydia believes it is time to bring effective change at the highest decision-making level at the L.A. Community College District. Currently, LACCD is poorly run in the areas of finances, administration, and most importantly the lack of academic skills of students entering college for the first time. Lydia has an A, B, and C approach:

A - Achieving Academic Excellence: Every high school student should be given the opportunity to attend community college courses that pertain to career goals, trade skill or continuing on to a four-year college. There must be a coordinated effort of aligning both secondary schools and college entrance classes in Academic Standards and Curricula.

B - Building Fiscal Responsibility: Establish oversight and transparency for every tax dollar received and spent. Assure funds are being used for education in a responsible manner, not tied up in LACCD’s bureaucracy.

C - Cultivating Success after Graduation: In the job market, 35% of the openings require a four-year college degree, while 65% require a vocational trade skill. We must ensure that every school develops and maintains well-rounded Academic and Vocational Programs that prepare our youth for college and the post-graduate job market, as well as trade skills for those for whom four-year college is not a viable option.

Lydia Gutierrez is supported by students, community leaders and members, pastors, parents, teachers, and business owners.

“I want our students to be successful in life, but without a quality education, they will not have a chance in today’s competitive global economy.”

Let’s put an experienced and trusted leader in office.

Lydia A. Gutierrez, M.A.

Lydia has a strong work ethic inherited from her grandparents, who as migrant farm workers, worked fields across the U.S. to support the family. Her father, a former longshoreman in San Pedro (ILWU Local 13) for 25 years, was disabled due to a car accident. Lydia’s mom, a San Pedro native, raised the family with help of her husband and support from disability insurance. Her grandfather helped build the San Pedro Courthouse and her great-grandmother worked in the Fish Canneries on Terminal Island.

Lydia has spent her entire life in the Harbor Area, blessed with very strong values of dignity and respect, and giving service to the community. She has been a school teacher and has worked in the business sector while successfully pursuing advanced levels of education to further her passion for education.

Lydia’s love for education has led her to earn the following achievements:

    • Cal State University at Dominguez Hills Master Degrees in Multi-cultural Education and Administration
    • Pepperdine University Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts
    • Master Teacher for UCLA’s Math Project Center X
    • Credentialed in Administration
    • Credentialed in Multiple Subjects K-12
    • Credentialed in Bilingual Education
    • Fellow from Cal State Long Beach in the Writing Project
    • Lecturer for the Los Angeles County Teachers Mathematics Association

Lydia has been committed to the welfare of others since she was a child. At age 12, she began teaching a Sunday School class for elementary children, visited lonely senior citizens, and helped neighbors with chores.

As a professional educator, Lydia dedicated two years to teaching in Colombia, South America. After returning to the U.S., she retained her commitment for the needy. Lydia spent seven more years during her spring, summer, and holiday breaks committed to giving humanitarian aid to the street children of Colombia, as well as working with local orphanages. She also spent time in the Philippines providing humanitarian help.

Lydia’s professional career began as a teacher, but after her father’s death she temporarily left the field to increase her ability to help her family. She worked in the aerospace field as an administrator for the F/A 18 Radar and later as an acting supervisor in Cost Estimating for the Bradley Tank parts division. She then left the field and was able to return to her passion, joy, and love of teaching.

Lydia has also been active in her hometown of San Pedro. She has served seven years as an elected Board Member on the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council. She served on the Public Safety Committee, Education Committee, the Budget and Finance Committee, and the Cultural Committee.

Lydia presently serves as California Teachers Association Co-Chair of the State Legislative Committee for Adult, Alternative, and Career Technical Education. Lydia's responsibility along with her committee is to review all state legislation and recommend legislation that will have a positive impact for the betterment of career employment for our youth.
